Popular Post Wavergray
Hello and welcome to the second of the new PSNP Interviews. Our second interviewee is @Andrea Stock Questions. 1. How did you come up with your PSN name? It’s just my name, then some numbers I pulled out of thin air because they flow well enough I guess. My previous account (Superunknown9281) was named after the famous Soundgarden album. 2. What games convinced you get your PlayStation 3, Playstation Vita, and/or PlayStation 4? I’ve had a PS3 since 2007 using it for Rock Band/Guitar Hero, but as far as what encouraged me to get into it for trophy hunting and more seriously last year it wasn’t any specific game. I liked how the trophy system was set-up and saw a bunch of games that would translate on either console better than they would on PC, so I gave PS3 a shot and later found a cheap PS4. 3. What are your top 5 game series and why? Total War (PC) – One of the many game series that helped get me into history which is my big thing I guess. You control a nation on the macro level during turn-based segments, then an army during real time battles. Lots of different time periods are represented in the series. Resident Evil – A sentimental classic of mine, one of the first series I played. I don’t care about the continuity because it is dumb as hell but I do like the direction of games like RE5 and 6 even if they weren’t as good as the old ones. If nothing else, I liked that they offered co-op as not enough games do that. The Witcher – First one was pretty much trash but the second and third ones are classics. They have such high production value and a much more interesting choice and consequence system than the likes of Bioware RPGs with their transparent good/evil choices. Guitar Hero/Rock Band – No real point listing these separately but these games were almost all the console gaming I did for years. Finding a full band of four people who can play is such a uniquely thrilling experience that you don’t get from many other games, especially if you manage to do it locally. XCOM – I played Enemy Unknown for an entire summer. They are very satisfying games once you learn how to play them and can clear entire maps without even taking enemy fire, not to mention I like the aspect of the entire world banding together to fight a common cause, where it doesn’t just end up being run entirely by Americans/Europeans like that trashy Independence Day film. 4. What are your top 5 games and why? Payday 2 – I met the love of my life on this game, and that is really all I can say. Europa Universalis IV – Sort of similar to the Total War series but way more complex and demanding (I would’ve hated it as a kid.) It’s an interesting way to learn about historical regions and empires, though I did once write a paper for school on how its portrayal of Africa is rather demeaning and wrong. Knights of the Old Republic – Probably my most played RPG back in the day, but I never did beat it all the way through, I was terrible about finishing games when I was younger. Such an interesting take on Star Wars, with memorable companions and a fighting system that was new and enjoyable. Age of Empires II – Truthfully for all the recognition this game has had over the years, it wouldn’t have made my top 5 of games until 2014. That year I bought the remastered edition and played the new campaigns, and I’ve played the others since then while discovering the joy of multiplayer for the first time (South Africa internet was way too shitty for me to think about playing it online when it first came out.) Probably not a great way to learn about history but it does have some famous names, ideas and weapons to kind of absorb and maybe check out on your own later. Saints Row 3 – I loved the character customization options in this, I loved the story, the co-op was awesome fun. I’m not that interested in open world but saint’s row did it as well as anyone. Another game that means a lot to me because of who I played it with. 5. Top 5 TV shows whether they be animated or live-action, why, and would you recommend them to people? Game of Thrones keeps getting dumber and worse (and has been on a downward trajectory for most of four seasons now) but it is still good fun to watch with other people and it has top class performances. Narcos is good fun, but I feel like the fact that it is in my top 5 is basically an indicator of how little TV I watch. It has Pedro Pascal and that makes it good, basically, not to mention the setting is fleshed out well. The other lead is terribly boring though, and the show often blazes through secondary antagonists faster than Assassin’s Creed II. I like Mr Robot I guess, or maybe more accurately I feel like I’m supposed to like it and then some episodes I do but then others I get frustrated by how pretentious it is. Probably worth checking out though. Black Mirror is probably my top pick for TV show, it shows the dystopia of modern life yet does it with more punch than Mr Robot generally achieves, mostly because of its anthology format. There are a lot of topics covered in this show and to see entertainment that validates the things I feel and read about is great fun. Luther is good I guess. It is a bit like Narcos in that for the most part it sucks but then you get Idris Elba on screen, and sometimes even Idris Elba with whoever it is that plays Alice, and then it is magic.6. Top 5 favorite music bands/group/artist? Lorde is definitely the best. Only like 20 songs but 15-17 of them are brilliant and she has a lot of promise as someone who will be writing songs for decades to come. Before Lorde I used to like Soundgarden the best but now they are basically old news, which is a shame because I loved their last album and was excited for more. Now they are either going to go in a new and embarrassing direction with some hack (like Queen) or just retire gracefully. Most of the songs are ruined for me now, which sucks but it isn’t a feeling I’ve been able to shake these last few months. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Rage Against the Machine. I feel like you can’t make a Marxist propaganda video without at least one of their songs in it, so there’s that. But they do have some dank videos as well like the one where they shut down Wall Street and there is a game show interspersed with various early 2000s U.S. political memes (George Bush and Al Gore are the same!) Run the Jewels has so many good songs and I really enjoy their live performances, I don’t normally know anything about rap but RTJ is transcendent. I used their FIFA 18 kit for all 63 games of ultimate team I ended up playing to get that plat. Daft Punk is a really nice band to grind trophies to. They don’t usually have much in the way of lyrics, most of their songs have a strong, driving beat, and their albums are long enough that you can just listen to them nonstop for an hour and not have to pick anything else. 7. Your favorite platinum? I have had a lot of platinums I’ve enjoyed. Rock Band 2 doing the no pause, no fail, expert mode endless setlist was a great memory and probably the first legitimately hard platinum I managed. XCOM 2 was my largest time commitment on a platinum so far I think, and certainly the hardest. FIFA World Cup 2014 brought back good memories and was so much fun I didn’t expedite the boost process and instead played out every single game. 8. Your least favorite platinum? There is probably about a 50-way tie for worst platinum I have. All the Mundi games, Shrek, Megamind, a bunch of stuff I’ve completely repressed and can’t bother looking up. As far as stuff that isn’t shameless trophy trash and took some modest effort to earn, probably PES 2014. Just an endless shitty grind in a horribly ugly game. I would probably give PES another chance if they had a trophy list this easy because that’s just how shameless I am, but their current lists are much harder so fuck that FIFA for life. 9. Have you ever been tempted to switch over to the Xbox/Nintendo/PC gaming ecosystems? I still have a gaming PC, and I would play certain games on it if they came out, but I don’t care to switch back on a full time basis. Too many UR gains to leave behind now. Don’t care about Nintendo, and no real reason to switch from PS4 to Xbox (I would argue the opposite is true as well.) 10. If you could have one game from any gaming generation be remade or rereleased what would it be? I would pick Resident Evil 3 to be remade. It is a sneaky contender for the title of best Resident Evil game, and since 1 already has a remake + remaster and 2 has a remake in the works, it’s the natural choice. Of the early games it is definitely the one that best gave the impression of danger and urgency, especially when Nemesis started chasing you around. 11. How far are you willing to go for a platinum? I spent $150 on a drumkit for one trophy in Guitar Hero Metallica. I’ve bashed my brains out in countless irritating PSNP gaming sessions with randoms. I buy trophy trash to win competitions, then stay up into the dead of night during those competitions to get a win. In other words, the better question may be what I wouldn’t do for those #gainz. Community Questions Why did you change your PSN profile after obtaining over a 100 plats? by @Dragon-Archon It means a lot to me to represent South Africa and I didn’t know when I made a PSN account that I couldn’t change countries (I’m used to Steam where you can change at the drop of a hat.) On its own that wasn’t quite enough for me to switch but there came a point when I could no longer stomach showing any kind of support for the US (I made my new account in Nov. 2016 so you maybe guess what,) and to a much lesser extent I embraced the chance to make a new account to do it better than on my first account. I would say I’m succeeding so far with better plats, and a better completion percentage. Earliest memory that you have for when you played your first game? by @YaoiGod I played Star Wars: Dark Forces and Tomb Raider sometime in 1997-1998 on my uncle’s Playstation. Among my favorite franchises I can’t say I have that many characters I really like. If you were chosen to live in your favorite game's world, would you jump in knowing the hidden risk it has that your favorite characters in that game's universe are slowly killed one by one? by @YaoiGod I mean I’m not a fangirl for much of anything or invested in that kind of stuff. So I would jump into the Tropico universe and run my own Caribbean island and if the characters in that game died it wouldn’t bother me (and I may be the one killing them!) What's your favorite game genre? by @MysticjMax I prefer strategy, turn based or otherwise. It doesn’t have a massive representation on playstation but I appreciate when it shows up nonetheless. What is your favorite game? by @MysticjMax My fav game is Payday 2 for reasons outlined above What can you tell us about the gaming scene in South Africa? by @Sargon It’s pretty small, but growing by the year I would say. The African gaming scene in general has been the subject of some of my academic work and generally speaking mobile game development is reasonably big and will probably be the main gateway for Africans to connect with video games for the foreseeable future. Consoles and gaming computers are a large expense and in cities where power outages are frequent they are not a super high priority, but there are game trucks you can rent that are sort of a mobile arcade (I’ve never used this, but it’s a big thing in West Africa apparently.) When people do own consoles they play the expected sorts of games like FIFA, Call of Duty, Destiny and so on. There have actually been a fair few games developed by South Africans on Steam, but to my knowledge Broforce is the only such game to have reached consoles. Who is the picture of the person in your avatar and is the name of that person "Andrea?" by @Beyondthegrave07 Nah it fan art I found on the internet of Lorde. If all the games on your profile suddenly added 50 DLC trophies a piece, what would you do? by @Beyondthegrave07 I wouldn’t care all that much about DLC I mean if that happened then the standards of what constituted a good completion percentage would also shift, and since mine is in that good spectrum now it would still probably be good after that. Some games I would relish the chance to play again (provided the DLC was reasonably priced,) but others would be left undone forever. Is your nickname related to the Soundgarden album of the same name? by @Sargon Yes, but it is not my top Soundgarden album. I prefer Down on the Upside and King Animal, though I do like almost every song on Superunknown. 9281, what does it signify? by @Bullstomp Absolutely nothing! If you could be any dinosaur in the galaxy which one would you be? by @Galactic Balls What a silly question everyone knows the Earth is 6000 year old and dinosaurs are a hoax perpetuated by the Chinese (tanystropheus, it would be fun to have such a long neck maybe.) What thought is put into which game or plat goes to which account, if any? by @ERICVOLTAGE No games go on Superunknown these days unless it unlocks a random trophy while boosting. I haven’t earned a plat on it in half a year I think. I did play on Superunknown a bit for THTL S4 I think but that was in February and that is going to hold as the swan song for that account. Do you ever feel burnt out playing loads of games in a short period? And what do you do to combat that? by @Edunstar84 It is pretty easy to get burnt out on lots of short games and really I can only manage 1 burst of short games every couple of months, but within that burst I can usually be pretty productive and push through the burnout. The THTL is great for that as it has motivation in the form of winning and not letting your team down, but also is short enough to where you aren’t playing trash for all eternity. After a season for that or another competition that relies on trash is over, I usually take a long break to play things that are actually fun and catch my attention. Vice City, or Liberty City? by @Super-Fly Spider-Guy I haven’t played any of those games, I played a bit of GTA 5 when it came out on PC a couple years ago. I would pick Red Dead as my favorite Rockstar game though, LA Noire in second. What is your actual job in real life? by @GarciaFever Housewife, the best and easiest job of all (especially with no plans for children.) Clean for a couple hours a day, make dinner, help out various in-laws every once and awhile, then all the time I want for trophy gains or research or whatever I want. What have been your favorite moments this past year? Both in-games and on the site. by @spazza136 I graduated university this year so I guess that was nice. My best moment on the site was winning Plat Pyramid S2 over Gary Danial by under an hour. We both finished 10 games (of ascending degrees of rarity) in barely over 8 days, and it took a lot of composure, strategy, and luck for me to come out on top. My best moment in gaming was getting the XCOM 2 platinum, so satisfying! Having had a very successful dominating couple of years across all forms of competitions on this site what motivates you to continue competing? by @CjShai Just pushing myself to be the best I can be really. I like the challenge of trophy hunting and the preparation and composure you need to have to do well. Do you have a certain trophy goal / level etc in mind or just whatever happens? by @CjShai I don’t care that much about trophy levels or milestones, as you may be able to tell based on the fact that almost all of my milestones are trash. I like moving up in the world/country ranks though and would like to be 1st in South Africa someday though, so whatever it takes to get that I guess. Would you consider joining The Corporation ( a CJ backed collaboration) in 2018? by @CjShai Yes, I would consider it! I see you're playing lots of sports games, what NFL team is your favorite? by @Rick_Sanchez The funny thing about all the NFL games I play is that I know almost nothing about the NFL, though after 6 plats I’ve picked up a fair bit of the rules I guess. I only do it for trophy gains to be honest, but they are kind of fun. The real NFL has too much commercials for me. I’ll say my favorite team is the Bills because they used to play in Toronto a couple games a year, but I’m not attached to them massively. Mamelodi Sundowns FTW! What satisfaction do you find in competitions, personally? by @B1rvine It is definitely down to factors outside of one’s control to a large extent, but most competitions have that to some extent (look at how much some countries spend on the Olympics compared to others, for just a quick example.) So really for me and knowing I do have some innate advantages as far as time and money, I usually take the attitude of win or bust, and get a lot of satisfaction from that. But I’m not going to think less of people who don’t see it as a priority or can’t devote as much time or money to it for one reason or another. At the end of the day it is supposed to be fun and if everyone has their own goals/expectations and is getting their own satisfaction from competing then that’s the best outcome. How do you think you'd fare in a competition where all things are equal? by @B1rvine I think I would do well, though pretty clearly not as well as I do now. Even if you take away the time and money advantages I still have a decent level of skill, and I’m also fairly meticulous in how I attack and plan for games/competitions. I am also fairly perseverant, and can stay composed when things don’t go right. I would like to see this become a reality because I think the socioeconomic conditions that such a thing would require would create a much better world far beyond the realm of trophy hunting. What in your opinion is the worst Strokes album and why is it Comedown Machine? by @SkyMason I like the Strokes quite a lot but I mostly have him as an avatar because those were the two best banner images I could find in 10-15 minutes of searching. I will give you a full ranking of the albums and to do that I don’t even have to list the albums. Label the albums 1-5 in chronological order. That is the exact order of quality of Strokes albums. In your profile says that one of your interests is "Fantasy Basketball"... what's dad? like those basketball related animes? by @Uchiha_Snake__ It’s like fantasy NFL but not entirely bullshit and dependent on a 1 game sample size each week. If you don’t know what that is, you basically draft players from real teams and earn points based on their real life output in several categories (or cumulative weighted output, if you are boring.) It is very frustrating but also satisfying when you get a late round draft pick or free agent who does really well. What is the meaning of life, other than trophy hunting? by @Muur1993 To achieve fully automated luxury gay space communism, of course. Any day now… As a female gamer in the community, have you ever encountered any negative interactions and how have you approached the situation? by @Mesopithecus I haven’t experienced much in the way of negative reactions for my gender, luckily. I’m not sure why because it is pretty clearly a problem lots of people face and I don’t think I do anything specific to avoid it or think for a second that it can’t happen to me. What game, if any, has ever made you give up on it, either due to an extreme difficulty curve or poor game mechanics? by @Mesopithecus I haven’t really given up on a game yet on PS, but I guess I may have de facto given up on Madden 25 if I don’t ever figure out this last dumb broken trophy. Most of the rhythm games I’ve added to my profile but not yet finished will be extremely difficult plats and if I give up on any games it will probably be them, but I haven’t played them enough to make that determination yet. You've participated in a number of community events, who has been your favorite opponent? by @Mesopithecus There have been lots of fun opponents. I think Zajac is the top competition because he’s selective about what he enters and gets UR plats at about the same rate I do while playing much tougher stuff. As far as players who tend more towards volume Unknown is probably the top but I have a lot of respect for Walt and Blades as well. I would like to compete against Zone, yourself, and Stalker in something, but haven’t had the chance yet outside of team league and the one season of THL. For trash talk obviously Kent even though he doesn’t win he is an excellent heel, and it’s always fun watching Jem’s spectacular plans fail spectacularly. Who is more likely to ever win a trophy competition, @jem or @Kent10201 :awesome:? by @Lucas I did have a very snarky answer here but then Kent joined my team for rare trophy hunter’s team league. Naturally if we lose it’s all his fault but failing that he should get a win first. What type of trophy hunter do you consider yourself? A speedrunner, a completionist, or a mix of them? by @Deceptrox I like doing rare games, but I also like (in a relative sense) doing lots of trash quickly to win competitions, and it’s all in the name of trophy hunting. Completionist comes with the territory of trophy hunter to an extent, though I don’t bother with anything that isn’t required except I did collect all the gwent cards in Witcher 3, even the DLC ones that didn’t count for a trophy. I just like gwent though. I don’t really do speedruns but I do have the fastest time in two games (rugby world cup 2011 and madden 18.) Just something I saw the opportunity for and then did, I usually mix up my games or hold platinums for events too much to be a consistent speedrunner. Plus I don’t want to practice the same game over and over or anything both those games were 1st try and if I didn’t manage it so be it. So I guess I’m somewhat of an all-rounder, but mostly trophy hunting. Have you ever considered playing highly challenging games as Super Meat Boy, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Cloudberry Kingdom, or Spelunky (among others)? by @Deceptrox I don’t have any experience in those genres, and I have too much other stuff to play to spend hundreds of hours on a genre I don’t even know if I like. So probably not. Was there any game(s) that you enjoyed to the point of skipping sleep? by @Deceptrox Frequently. My obligations are flexible enough that I can sleep in virtually every day I need to, so I will stay up late if I’m engaged in a game, trying for a trophy, in a competition, whatever. It’s not much of a tough decision when you know you aren’t sacrificing anything. Are you a human, or a robot that's powered by a need to destroy people in trophy competitions and to play games without any concept of the term "fun"? by @Ratchet2425 Did you know that in South Africa robot refers to a traffic light? I am definitely not that. But anyways, I still don’t know what fun is so I guess that wasn’t coded properly. But I do derive satisfaction from crushing Kent and various others in competition. Is that fun? I don’t know. Also, of all the competions you have competed in over the years, which is your favorite to compete in? by @Ratchet2425 THTL. Strategy and teamwork make it the best. It would be a lot lower on the list without good teammates (so thanks for that, Clawz and Ark and Cj and Meso and Ratchet) If you could go back and re-plat a game again on your same account which would it be and why? by @Tearraven World Cup 2014. Such a fun plat to work through, with a nice mix of grind and skill (the scenario trophies.) Lucky for me we should have a re-release of sorts with World Cup 2018 next year, I just hope the trophy list is relatively similar. What is your favorite Adventure Story game? by @TurdFlingingApe I’ll pick Grim Fandango as my top adventure game. There’s a lot to like about it but do you realize there is a part where comrade Manny helps organize the worker bees while The Internationale plays in the background? That alone makes it better than all other games in the genre. I still get chills! What's your favorite food(s)? by @TurdFlingingApe I don’t eat food I am a robot, see above. Are you like Andrea from Walking Dead? by @TurdFlingingApe I don’t know. I know almost nothing of the TV show, really just play the games. When did you become a Lorde fan? by @Hertz 2013 when she came out with the Love Club EP. Fave Lorde song? by @Hertz This is too tough. Buzzcut Season, Perfect Places, Love Club, White Teeth Teens, and World Alone could all claim this title on a given day. Why do you love them NFL and FIFA gainz so much? by @Hertz UR gains that are easy. Can’t beat that! Was there any specific game that inspired your trophy habits or were they caused by some general reason? by @Wdog-999 The first game I got to 100% was Call of Juarez: Gunslinger on PC. I loved doing the duel challenges and it has taken off from there I suppose. What is 2 + 2? by @Wdog-999 With all the math questions you've had, I wonder if you would consider doing something for charity. It's a great thing you have asked these questions, but why not give something back it doesn't have to be $, perhaps cross book it with some community service or donated time, just a thought. What are the five worst trophy trash games you've played and why? by @Kent10201 Inner Kung Fu, Orc Slayer, Shrek, Megamind and Wheels of Aurelia. These don’t deserve a proper write-up so just suffice to say that they are awful, low effort trash that is sure to drag down the quality of any profile. What are the most annoying types of trophies for you in games? by @Lava_Yuki I don’t mind most trophies really. Maybe online trophies that require a massive luck or boost effort (like the ones in Arkham Origins for example,) but generally I can find some pleasure in most trophies. As a female gamer, what type of female game characters do you prefer? The strong independent type, the sexy type, or the damsel in distress/ cute girly types? by @Lava_Yuki It’s not usually something that makes a big difference to me. I’m not someone who plays games for characters all that often. I did like Clover from Payday 2 quite a lot I guess, so probably more of the former in general. Do you find that your heart starts racing in boss battles or other possibly stressful/ difficult parts of games? by @Lava_Yuki Yeah I get quite a bit of adrenaline at times. I did the tackle alley in Backbreaker recently and that was very tense especially the later waves. Speedruns also tend to have that effect. Who do you think is the most good looking male video game character, and the also the prettiest female character? by @Lava_Yuki Margeurite in RE7 and Adolf Hitler in Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. What is your hobby besides gaming? by @Dreggit My big hobby outside of gaming is doing research. I love reading about history and sociology, especially as it pertains to Africa but really just about anything. What is something that is something you feel strongly about that everyone should know? by @Dreggit I am a big believer in democracy at the workplace – employees eaching owning and having an equal share in a corporation, and making decisions for themselves rather than relying on the autocratic whims of a middle-manager, CEO, or board of directors. Such a system would be more in line with the purported values of a western society – why is democracy currently only a system fit for government and some sectors of education, while the workplace is run like a collection of feudal fiefdoms? The thing I’d most like to see in my lifetime is this economic model of production adopted the world over. We would surely be better off for it. What is something about your country that is not largely known to the world? by @Dreggit The president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, is one of the only leaders in the world with a lower approval rating than Donald Trump. 12 years ago (before he was president,) he was the defendant in a rape trial where he claimed he took a shower to try to reduce the risk of contracting HIV after intercourse with the accuser. This lead to an infamous proto-meme where he was drawn with a shower head in various political cartoons. Thank you @Andrea for being the second interviewee in the new era of PSNP Interviews. Lava_Yuki
Happy to see a couple of my questions! I too also don't like online and luck based trophies that need boosting.
