Ok, i suppose that Riddled Corpses EX was the last platinum of this year, but nop, it seems than i got one last plat for real, and its a touhou one.,

 

now, i was pretty much vanilla over touhou in general, i mean, i know the franchise in general, but this is the first game i got to play full time and it was something indeed.

 

so this fighting game got all i need, bad graphics, simple gameplay and modes, framerate issues for every match thanks to all the orbs flying around (bullet hell thing i guess?), no unlockables at all..............and i love every second of gameplay put in the system.

 

As a fan of flawed games in general, i cannot recommend it enough, its like $9.99 right now, but with endless fun and laughs (at least for me).

#21 - Fallout 3!

 

Although I got the plat roughly 2 months ago it’s still my most recent (grinding out Far Cry 2 has taken up all of my time).

 

Game Difficulty: 2-3/10 

Time to 100%: 1-2 weeks with on and off play most likely (I did it in less than a day with a route I developed though)

 

Super fun game and one of the most unique RPG experiences I’ve encountered. My only gripe is the game is horribly optimized on the PS3 (I’m almost dreading starting New Vegas). I still recommend to any gamers who haven’t played and still dabble with the PS3!

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Wow, just wow. I was beginning to think it was impossible for EA to publish a good Star Wars game. Although, I had faith in Respawn Entertainment because they've never disappointed me. I love how you visit multiple worlds and diverse environments in this game. The boss fights are so good as well. While the boss fights didn't feel repetitive to me, I could totally see other people might feel that way. And that ending though! Everyone just needs to experience this game. Sekiro was my GOTY, but I feel like this game might have taken the crown for me.

#128 Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise

I'm just going to start my introduction with this short video I created  (It does have a very very minor spoiler for a boss fight that you pretty much encounter in your first 10-20 minutes in the game if you care about that otherwise it's spoiler free). Enjoy

What a badass game! Story was pretty decent as expected from a RGG studio game and while the plot twist at the end was a little bit of stretch and made me scratch my head going wtf, it still holds up! Even for a person who never watched the anime I was able to understand pretty much everything and I wasn't lost. In my opinion, this game has one of the best and I really mean one of the best boss fights if not the best boss fights I've encountered (more on that below where I post my favourite osts!)

 

Gameplay is where this shines the most! From great minigames (more on that below too ), memorable substories and a gratuitous combat, I was never really bored in my 100 hour or so journey according to the in-game stats (although timer runs in the pause menu..)

 

My favourite minigames from most to least favourite were:

 

- Dr. Ken where you had to treat patients and kill goons in a timed rhythm game . Here's a short snippet of what it sounds like and also me getting a perfect in the final song which was insane to the say least.. But sooo much fun imo.

- Bartender Ken where you get to destroy your controller trying to shake a drink (physically shaking your controller), mix a drink (rotating the R stick), or sculpt an ice ball (mashing the buttons in sequence)  as well as learning about some of the people in the city of Eden.

- Coliseum duels simply because of the incredible combat

- Casino games such as poker, blackjack and roulette

- Racing which was serviceable but the customization options that were given was something I really enjoyed

- Manager Ken for last simply because of the annoying grind I had to do in the end in order to upgrade all the talismans to max level and pay off a 100M debt for a side story :/. Though the main menu soundtrack is a bop yo!

Platinum wise, the game is a massive grind simply because you have to max out all the talisman levels which entails gaining a shit ton of crafting materials through the side activities mentioned above and earning the money to be able to do so. Moreover, maxing out all the abilities forced me to spend about 3 hours or so in the wastelands killing goons. Wasn't a big of a problem as much as the talisman grind though because going ATATATATTATATA never gets old

 

Overall, if you enjoy the yakuza games by RGG studios or watched the anime, there's a high chance this'll be right up your alley. With that said, I rank this game as followed based on what I played so far: Yakuza 0 or Judgment > Kiwami 2 > FoTNS> Kiwami 1. 

 

As usual, because I appreciate the devs putting an effort in creating the soundtracks or obtaining the licenses for the original soundtracks of the anime, I like to share those with everyone as they're definitely going into my playlist! Here are my favourites! Enjoy!

This soundtrack was actually used in Kiwami 2 and I'm posting this version because it's the shorter version from the FoTNS version. You get this soundtrack in a battle versing Amon after you complete all the substories!

The Artist of Denska

Known as "the street artist who brought Denska back to life".

 

I received a 30% discount code from Sony, during the Christmas sales and I really didn't want to spend more money, but, since I always complain that I never receive these promotions, I thought that I should use my discount, now that I actually received something. I enjoy these types of games, that let me paint or do graffiti, so I chose "Concrete Genie".

"Concrete Genie" is a beautiful game, with lots of emotional moments, about a good boy, who is being bullied by a group of nasty kids. I think bullying is something we can all identify with, in one way or another, so it's easy to become touched by this game's story. While trying to escape from the kids that torment him, Ash has the task of bringing the abandoned town of Denska back to life, through his art. Later on, he actually finds out that his bullies had a troubled past and live tormented by their own personal demons.

The gameplay, in Concrete Genie, consists, basically, in painting, some simple puzzles, trying not to alert the kids and we even have some combat in the second part of the game. The combat was rather annoying, but I loved painting! I don't know why, but painting and interacting with the Genies was very emotional, for me, indeed.

Trophy-wise, the platinum was very easy. Most trophies are achieved by just playing the game normally. We also have collectibles and most of them are easy to find, although figuring out what you're missing, after you complete the game, can be a bit troublesome. The painting collectibles can be a bit buggy too.

In the end, "Concrete Genie" was a short, but beautiful game, with a touching message of kindness and friendship. It's definitely a perfect game to play during Christmas time. I, probably, will go back to it just to enjoy some more painting.

With that, the Infamous franchise is now complete, and I'm really glad I gave them ALL a chance, as it is now a series that I've gone from not caring too much for, to hoping that somewhere down the line, it does make a comeback.

 

Granted, some things haven't changed; enemies' attacks seem to knock off half to full health whenever it's inconvenient to you; citizens make it a point to jump into your line of fire; the way enemies can consistently juggle you into death got VERY tiring. And no, I never got used to the "confuse the crap out you by littering the screen with special effects" aspect of gameplay. 

 

But thankfully, many things have changed for the better; enemies' now have to be on your radar before they attack, and you need to get their attention before they start assaulting you.There is a much greater variety of unique moves at your disposal for both paths, the map size is perfect, never feeling to big or too small; the ways you affect your karma are straight, simple and to the point. Your means of traversal have greatly expanded, allowing you to go faster both horizontally, AND vertically. Overall, it's just a really fun game to play, and a big step up from the first one. 

 

The best change, however, came from the story and characters.

 

Thanks to advances in tech, the story is now told, well, properly, with in game cut-scenes that let us seeing and hear a characters' emotions, rather than being told through a comic panel. They are now regulated to telling moments that happen in a flashback, and are much more effective as a result. 

 

The choice system is implemented so much better. Cole has much more agency of his own, and the game tries to make sens of very decision while still keeping characters from feeling like they have multiple personality disorders. Both endings are satisfying, if bittersweet, in their own ways, but it always feels right, like I really accomplished something. The supporting cast is also a huge step up; I'll admit I didn't really care for one of them, but the rest I really got to care about, and was sad what happened when it was all said and done.

 

So good job, Sucker Punch, on EVERY game in this series. It really does deserve the acclaim it's gotten, and I'm happy to have them all on my list.

Making the best use of my holiday time by clearing a few platinums this week. Next up was Hitman: Contracts, the second part of the Hitman HD Collection on PS3 though the third game in the series overall. The game improves on the previous titles in a number of aspects, mostly in variety and control, though it is decidedly shorter overall. I played it a ton back on PS2 and it could be my favourite in the franchise, although having to replay some missions to get the different weapons wasn't fun on Professional difficulty, which carries over some of the issues from the previous game, namely enemies just deciding to blast on you for no reason even when you're in disguise and playing it cool, requiring restart after restart. 

There isn't a real plot to the game, with just a backdrop of Agent 47 being wounded on a job in Paris and remembering past hits as he recovers. A motif that runs through the game is that every mission except for the last one features rain or snow to reflect the dodgy weather outside as 47 recuperates from a gunshot wound. A huge chunk of the game is made up of reimaginings of some missions from the original game. It shouldn't really work but it does, more like an anthology of different hits than a linear narrative experience. I do think the large emphasis on the Hong Kong missions takes a bit away from the game, however, especially since two of said missions take place on the same map. 

Not a whole lot to say on this game, really, just that it is a solid experience and a great blast from the past for someone like me who adored these games as a teen. Hopefully not my last platinum of 2019!

Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King

 

This was a nice little trip down memory lane. Played both of these games when I was a kid. The controls felt a tad awkward, but I changed the buttons and things went a lot smoother after that. I tried to do almost all the trophies without resorting to using too many cheats, but I did use them to complete The Lion King on difficult (I did try, but didn't get very far) and I did use the rewind feature when needed, but I fully played through for the most part. Wonder how my youthful self did so well on The Lion King. Aladdin isn't nearly as difficult. Strangely enough, I thought the trade demo on practice was tougher than the main game on the hardest difficulty. 

 

I have some complaints, though. One, the emulation for the Genesis version of The Lion King has really bad sound quality. You can barely hear it. Didn't have this issue with Aladdin or the SNES version of The Lion King. Another is that the bulk of the trophies were for Aladdin. Would've been nice if they gave The Lion King a bit more love instead of just completing it on every difficulty. Still, it was a very enjoyable trip down memory lane for me. It's a shame most people seem to be getting this just because the plat is quick and easy with cheats.

#108: WILL: A Wonderful World

 

(Missed opportunity to call it A Wonderful Platinum, if you ask me~)

 

It's honestly not something I've thought about before, but it makes sense, doesn't it? The god or goddess in charge of listening to desperate prayers and granting miracles would need nerves of steel and the ability to listen to unpleasant stories without being overwhelmed. WILL: A Wonderful World is a Chinese visual novel that lets you play as such a god/goddess pair, in charge of reading the pleas from a varied cast of characters and changing their fates by rearranging passages in their stories to alter their situations. It's a creative idea, and I am pleased with how these logic puzzles never quite stray into moon logic territory. Each "letter" has various endings which can in turn influence the way things go for other characters, reminding me rather a lot of 428: Shibuya Scramble's butterfly effect system. There are two caveats that hold me back from heartily recommending this to all and sundry, however.

 

The elephant in the room is the subject matter. People don't beg the gods of fate for intervention unless their need is really high, of course, which means that WILL's overall plot deals with some seriously grim stuff. Whilst it manages to handle things tastefully enough to avoid feeling outright exploitative, I really cannot overstate here how dark this game gets sometimes. I'm hard pressed to think of many other games that feature main characters who are human trafficking victims, or severely mentally unstable children in broken homes, or suicidal painters with stomach cancer. Yes, there are brighter storylines - one of the characters is in fact a stray cat who tends to have rather amusing scenarios, after you've sat through their absolutely heartbreaking introduction scene - but remember, you're gods of fate, you're not here to help people mow their lawn. The only thing that kept me going was the knowledge that I was actively helping these people avoid all their misfortune and misery.

 

Other than the subject matter, the other issue this game has is its graphics... or rather, its lack of graphics. Unlike most visual novels, WILL does not use the standard "character sprites in front of various detailed backgrounds" presentation. Other than occasional (admittedly well-drawn) CGs, you're mainly looking at solid colour backgrounds with text overlaid and a character silhouette in the corner. Lots of scenarios, therefore, rely on your own imagination to provide the narrative with visuals - this visual novel is more novel than visual, is what I'm saying. Interestingly, the trophies do not exactly boil down to "get all endings" like most VNs do. You won't have to grab each and every ending from each individual letter, instead you'll need to aim for specific outcomes, or having to replay a letter in which a character plays Street Fighter to have them perform all possible combos. It's fine, really.

 

So yes, overall, I did enjoy WILL, although I'm in desperate need for something more cheerful now. So if you'll excuse meeeeee...

#350 - Concrete Genie

I've had an interest in this ever since it was first announced, but after learning how short it was I decided against a day 1 purchase. I enjoyed it quite a bit, even though it was ridiculously short. The story is nothing particularly unique or special but it works, the game has some fun puzzle solving, and the core concept of painting on walls was well done and well controlled. I also enjoyed the collectible hunting (although the draw distance sometimes made it so you could be staring right at a collectible and not see it as it hadn't spawned in yet, which was a tad annoying.)

 

I'm not a very creative person however, so I don't think I fully appreciated what this game had to offer. Whenever the game gave me specific instructions for paintings (like telling me to put in some stars or grass) I at least tried to make it look pretty, but I never spent time painting random walls just for the sake of it like I feel you're probably supposed to. But I appreciate the fact that there's enough surrounding the painting mechanic in the game to be able to enjoy it even without utilizing that core mechanic to its full extent.

 

The length was definitely my biggest problem with it, I feel a little bad about blasting through it so quickly when it was a gift, but at least it was fun while it lasted. I'm not expecting a sequel or anything, this felt very standalone.

The enjoyment of this would be an 8 or 9 if it was a 15-hour game but it takes about 25 hours to 100% it and a further 15 hours idling for the 40-hour trophy.

The superhero stuff wears off after 10-15 hours at which point you are just mindlessly doing the side content but alas it was an easy platinum trophy and still fun for the most part - if you played 3, it uses the same map so some familiarity to the game.
