Hey I just noticed Dr_Mayus didn't post one this year but these are always fun, so i'm posting this in their honor. Same categories as last year. Minimal edits.

 

 

 

 

Welcome again to the annual PSNP Awards 

 

 

 

If you don't know what to do..here is the breakdown. For each award pick a game you play/platted this year (it doesn't have to have come out this year). Some will be the best...some the worst but all of it is meant to be fun and a way for us all to remember the games we have played.

Ahh, the It's Like Dark Souls plat. The game that had you pulling your hair out and cursing the gaming gods.

Which game had you pleading in the Status Updates for just one little thing to go your way?

 

Not necessarily a Platinum but a moment in a game where you sat back and said "I'm a Badass"

 

What game had you running around racking up kills? playing through 6 times? Trying to find the one item with a 0.01% drop rate?

What game did you just sink a ton of time into to earn that beautiful 

 

This one isn't opinion based...just what game in your backlog took you the longest (in terms of days, months, years) to complete.

 

This trophy is for the most fun you had playing online. Maybe it wasn't even for trophies.

Was it COD, or Fall Guys or some other game that you sunk hours into playing.

 

The complete opposite of the last one. Which buggy server, shitty campers, ridiculous online requirements

or complete deserted wasteland did you waste your time playing for that 

 

Which games has the most toe-tapping tunes. The game where the music doesn't drive you nuts while grinding out trophies.

 

We all have that game that we got from PLUS or off some digital sale. Which game did you just enjoy so much despite barely hearing about it before.

 

Usually reserve for some shitty AAA game with too much hype...but could also just be a game in a series you love.

Which game made you regret buying it and wished you could have your money and time back.

 

Simply put what is the best trophy image you earned this year.

Normally it would be a Platinum image but maybe there is some bronze trophy you earned that just had great image art.

 

 

Here is the award for the lazy developers that cannot figure out that trophy hunters might actually like to look at a nice trophy image.

This award isn't meant for your favourite game of the year...it is meant for your favourite plat. A favourite plat should be something that was a pure joy to earn.

It is one that you wish had multiple stacks so you could replay it to earn all the trophies again.

 

This is the opposite. This is the platinum that made you want to quit earning trophies. The one that was just a waste of your time.

Please go nuts and rip that shitty game a new one, you earned it.

Piece of Cake: Norman's Great Illusion

It's Like Dark Souls: Ghostrunner

Badass Award: Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout  (Infallible)

Grind of the Year: Marvel's Avengers  Grind was a pain, you need to repeat missions over and over, specially the Hive trophy (which is buggy btw)

Finally Done: Batman: Arkham Origins   7 Years.

King of the Internet: Dead By Daylight Been having a lot of fun with this game this last few months.

Worst Online Experience: Hood: Outlaws and Legends  There were many good things about this game, but it was a psplus game and after 2 weeks the game was almost empty.

Best Music: Tales of Arise The intro song is soooo good.

Sleeper Hit: Chicken Police   Mega underrated game, nobody talks about it.

Biggest Bomb: Far Cry 3: Classic Edition  4 is better in every way and this one only gets the attention because of the more known animals.

Best Trophy Images: Lost Ember Look at the Platinum image.

Worst Trophy Images: Dreamals: Dream Quest I hate this game so much I cannot push myself for the Platinum.

Best Female Character: Shionne. Tales of Arise   She is the heart and soul of the story.

Best Male Character:    Adam Jensen          Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Best Plat of the Year: Burnout Paradise: Remastered   I don't do stacks or racing games and this one was super fun.

Wurst Plat Ov Teh Yeer: AereA   The game really looked promising and kinda original... it wasn't

Most Anticipated Platinum of 2023: Cris Tales Been interested in this game since launch, had it on my Wishlist and now I have it thanks to PSPLUS.

First time seeing this thread and I loved it!

Here are my awards, got 74 platinum trophies this year so far (will try to do something really easy for the 75th).

 

Piece of Cake - Arrog

 

 

An artistic game with a 20 minute platinum. Really good and cheap game.

 

It's Like Dark Souls - Immortals Fenyx Rising

 

 

 I suck at puzzle games... big time. And this game is 70% puzzles. It was not a fun journey and was done 50% by me and 50% by youtube videos that I had to check. Not a hard plat, but a painful one for me.

 

Badass Award - Fury

 

 

Played in 2016 and could not pass the 5th boss. Start playing again this year and got the platinum for both PS4 and PS5 stacks from the ground in 4 days total. Was nice to realize that I've improved my abilites in games that rely on bullet hell mechanics.

 

Grind of the year - Injustice 2

 

 

Cat Call trophy took me 60h to get it. I know that can take a LOT more than that, but still... I'm glad its over.

 

Finally Done Award - Red Dead Redemption 2

 

 

I love RDR2, it's one of my favorite games of all time. I played on launch day but always lack the motivation to go for the platinum. This year I took the challenge, cleaned up the remaining online trophies and made it my 250th plat!

 

King of the Internet - Hyper Scape

 

 

An awesome game that got shut down on April this year. I played on launch day and came back with a boosting crew 1 week before servers go down to clear the remaining trophies. I only have good memories of this game and I'm really sad its gone. Also, the boosting crew was the best, we had a great 4h-5h of boosting. It was fun.

 

Worst Online Experience - Armello

 

 

Love this game, but the online on PlayStation is really really bad. I tried playing a couple of times, but it was so laggy that I had to do the plat offline. I heard that now they have crossplay between all platforms, so maybe its worth checking out!

 

Best Music - The Messenger 

 

 

This game has a lot of problems, specially regarding progression. But the music... oh, the music. There are not enough words to describe it. Amazing, outstanding, fantastic. I will keep listening its soundtrack forever.

 

Sleeper Hit - Lost Words: Beyond the Page

 

 

A friend of mine reccomended it and it was an amazing experience. Cried a couple times, not gonna lie. Its available on Plus Extra and its an easy 5h platinum  

 

Biggest bomb - Biomutant

 

 

Cant even describe how bad this game is. A 18h platinum that I wish I never touched. Poor combat design, bad quest design, extremely repetitive.

 

Best Trophy Image - Little Nightmares II

 

 

I see value in developers that make a custom image for each trophy. I value even more when it comes together with a clever description. 

Schooled - Best days of our short, terrible life

 

Worst Trophy Image - Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX

 

 

The platinum image is just the trophy list image... boring!

Great Protector of Radaxian - All trophies have been awarded

 

Best Female Character - Far Cry 6 (Dani Rojas)

 

 

The female voice acting on Far Cry 6's Dani Rojas is literally the best I've seen in a long time. Such a well written character with a lot of jokes and great phrases.

 

Best Male Character - Ghostwire: Tokyo (Akito & KK)

 

 

The game was not that good, but this duo deserves a spot. They talk ALL the time and are always making fun and interacting. Both complete themselves as a great character.

 

Best Platinum of the Year - Blasphemous

 

 

This game made my 2022 a little better. The gameplay, the art style, the soundtrack... everything was perfect. I really enjoyed the journey to the platinum trophy and will always remember it with a smile on my face.

 

Worst Platinum of the Year - Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

 

 

I simple hate this game and hate the boring platinum as well. For me, its not trying to accomplish anything and it does not "entertain" in any way. A bad game on my perspective.

 

Most Anticipated Platinum of 2023 - Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus 

 

 

This will be my 300th platinum trophy. I cant wait to go for Mein Leben and I cant wait to FINALLY plat this game (will do the DLCs as well).

PIECE OF CAKE AWARD - MY BROTHER RABBIT

A short and sweet Artifex Mundi game. It was quality easy stuff though (no lame trophies)

 

IT'S LIKE DARK SOULS - PERSONA 4 ARENA

Really, we should change the name of this category  because Dark Souls wishes to be as tough as Persona 4 Arena was. Combos, score attack, unforgiving AI...a true 10/10 in difficulty.

 

 

BAD ASS AWARD - DEFEATING MALENIA AT RUNE LEVEL 1

ELDEN RING

Yes she is Malenia, Blade of Miquella and she really gave me one hell of a hard time at the base level 1 run(video embedded here). However I think this was the most "damn I am badass "moment in 2022  

 

GRIND OF THE YEAR - ARCANA HEART 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!!

 

Grinding this game was not fun. Levelling up and filling the gallery took AGES!

 

FINALLY DONE AWARD - ASSASSIN'S CREED VALHALLA

 

I waited and waited...and waited...and WAITED for Ubisoft to finally be done with DLCs for this stupid game. Since 2021 was the year of the backlog cleanup for me, in 2022 all I had left creeping in my list was this garbage of a game  

 

KING OF THE INTERNET - DEAD OR ALIVE 6

 

I don't play online games unless I have to grind for a trophy. I initially planned to boost this game...but the servers were quite populated and I had to do half the matches and wins legit.

...which I did. It was fun. It was also the only serious online experience  

 

WORST ONLINE EXPERIENCE - OVERWATCH 2

 

I was thoroughly done with Overwatch 1 so when I saw OW2 being released I was "hah no way am I playing this again".

But then Blizzard rewrote the OW1 list into OW2 and started adding DLCs to my beautiful (former) 100% list....

 

BEST MUSIC - METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE

 

It's simply the best. I think everyone heard of the "STANDING HERE I REALIZE" song.

Every piece of soundtrack in this game is a banger!

 

SLEEPER HIT OF THE YEAR - TREASURES OF THE AEGEAN

 

I initially put Yakuza Dead Souls here, but I have heard of that game.

I had no idea what Treasures of the Aegean was, until I played it...and once I started, I played it obsessively over the week until I platinumed it.

A fantastic and unexpected platformer that has a criminally low playerbase.

 

BIGGEST BOMB OF THE YEAR - MARVEL VS CAPCOM INFINITE

 

This is what happens when a beloved fighting game franchise is overtaken by the movie company intellectual wise. Due to the success of the Avengers movies, MvC Infinite suffered some changes...or rather some surgery botches. All the fun MvC3 gameplay was removed (babies can't press buttons) , the characters look like they went to a trip inside a Chernobyl nuclear plant, the story makes me want to forget the English language and...the game itself looks like one of those stupid Korean Mobile ads.

Jesus what a crap game!

 

BEST TROPHY IMAGE -  - American Hero Platinum Trophy (Metal Wolf Chaos)

It is truly inspirational  

 

WORST TROPHY IMAGE -  HYPED UP (MARVEL VS CAPCOM INFINITE)

 

The zombie looks better than Frank West in this picture

 

BEST FEMALE CHARACTER - LILY (Ender Lilies Quietus of the Knight)

 

Lily is the last surviving priestess in a poisoned and corrupted world. She has the power to summon minions to aid her in battle.

I really enjoyed this game, it was my first platinum of 2022 and Lily is a great protagonist.

 

BEST MALE CHARACTER - KRATOS (GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK)

 

Despite my issues with the gameplay, Kratos was still the best male protagonist I played as, because...well..he's Kratos.

I was this close to put Jetstream Sam, but sadly he is only playable in a DLC, which is a damn shame   

 

BEST PLAT OF THE YEAR - SHADOW MAN REMASTERED PLATINUM

 

Since it's required to post the POTY, not the GOTY, my pick is Shadowman Remastered. Seeing your beloved 1999 game being remastered and rebuilt to have cut content restored...this platinum was a bliss. And even if there are 666 Cadeaux to collect, the smooth "metroidvania" mechanics that this game implements made it enjoyable. I'd gladly plat this game again.

Actually, I am replaying through the game once more because the devs added a new DLC with a Horror difficulty and a new boss. Hell yeah!

 

WORST PLAT OF THE YEAR - MARVEL VS CAPCOM INFINITE

I really wish I could forget the experience that this game was...

 

MOST ANTICIPATED PLATINUM OF 2023 - CATHERINE

 

 

Well that's it for me. 2022 was a great year  hope 2023 will be just as good!

Tetris Effect

 

Still plugging away at this one, and still one of the best versions of Tetris, which is in turn probably the most perfect videogame of all time... but holy hell is it a tough one!

Started in 2021, only got done in 2022 - thanks to the RIDICULOUS Bestiary trophy!

Far Cry 5

 

Not a great game - not even a particularly good one really - but playing through the Zombies DLC with my man @JoesusHCrust was a blast from start to finish!

An outstanding portrayal of an established character, that redefines her for all future instalments, as THE best character in the franchise.

Odin (Richard Schiff)

 

In my opinion, the single best portrayal of a villain in modern triple-A gaming - an OUTSTANDING blend of subtlety, acting chops, and unusual choices make Odin the standout on an already outstanding game.

I bought this game believing it to be a bit like One Night Stand, which I liked, unfortunately I misunderstood that it was actually a music album release with very limited interactivity. But that did make this platinum super simple to get.

 

 

I really didn't play many games that I found overly hard this year, and most of the difficulties with Sport Champions 2 I had completed in years past, and had only cleaned up now for some reason.

 

 

My 3 Condors in Everybody's Golf, all achieved 100% legit.

 

 

I got the Platinum for the PS4 and Vita... Jeez I was effectively treating it as a second job, *return from the ward* *get at least a silver in the two daily challenges* It's a good thing I like the game otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

 

 

For absolutely no good reason, I left Datura uncompleted for 10 years and 4 months, I was 14 when I first played it, and that frightens me.

 

 

I had actually started replaying the Assassin's Creed online before the shutdown was announced, it's still my favourite online mode of any game series ever.

 

 

It's stunning that this needed delaying for what ended up being released. Resident Evil Re:Verse is very dull.

 

 

We are OFK is a debut EP for a band, so it's not overly surprising that I like at least some of the music, I genuinely listen to "Footsteps" a bunch

 

This is also my game of the year (I was a Teenage Exocolonist), a visual novel card game that I'm currently writing a guide for, so if you wanna try it out, maybe wait for me to finish  

Wanna add another sleeper hit since no one on Playstation talks about the fantastic murder mystery of Tangle Tower

 

This game told me sympathise with an absolute monster, for the record I didn't forgive him for doing those crimes and I wanted him to trip over a brick.

 

 

This is probably show how simple I am... but I really like rainbows (Escape Academy)

 

 

That's just a screenshot... If you're not as pretty as Okami, you shouldn't even attempt a screenshot as a trophy image... We Were Here Too...

 

 

 

Tangent from I was a Teenage Exocolonist. A scientist who used to be close with her brother until she came out as trans, then lost herself in her studies and she can learn to heal or get so lost she creates a plague.

 

 

B12 from Stray holds the weight of humanity on his shoulders and needs to learn to move past his desire to preserve humanity's legacy, and prioritising the lives that need saving now.

 

 

It's the only sports game I've ever liked and I got so obsessed with it that my intention of just getting the online trophies before the servers closed morphed into a Platinum run.

 

 

This was one of the other big grinds of my year, and I hated all of it, game stopped being fun after about 20 minutes.

 

 

I love Telltale style games, so naturally I wanna play Wolf Among Us 2

Radioactive Dwarfs: Evil From the Sewers

If you try to walk out of the entrance from level 1 they game gives you a joke ending but thinks you beat it and pops all the trophies.

 

 

Tunic

While it works for the combat, the Golden Path was the Dark Souls of puzzles for me this year.

 

 

Elden Ring

I spent 4 hours on that last boss and three days on Melenia. But I did it on my own. I jumped up and screamed when I won.

 

 

Among Us

Just grinding out kills and tasks was kinda boring.

 

 

Bioshock (PS3)

I had originally played this on 360. When Infinite came out if had a free copy that i played once for like 20 minutes and then for some reason never went back to it. Actually played it this year putting the platinum completion times at 9 years, 4 months, 1 week, 3 days, 13 hours.

 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection

It was super fun to play old TMNT beat'em ups with my buds. I should have played Shredder's Revenge this year but I just didn't. I'll get to it next year.

 

 

Jump Force

 

A friend and I wanted to try getting the trophies before the servers went down and after an hour we both said fuck this and threw the game away.

 

 

Cult of the Lamb

 

On blast, on repeat, ever since it came out.

 

 

Toem

Didn't know about it till it was free on PS+ and it was one of the chillest things I played all year. I totally recommend it if you got it earlier this year and haven't played it yet.

 

 

Saints Row

Took the coolest shit of all time with Saints Row the Third and just made if fucking terrible.

 

 

Pizza Party! - Finish Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (N)

TMNT Cowabunga Collection

It's just the cover of the TMNT arcade game but it's one of the most radical images of all time.

Ellie - The Last of Us Part 1

The new version of TLOU was amazing to play and I had never played the DLC so it was cool to finally see that.

 

 

Kratos - God of War Ragnarok

Not only did he have the best story but nhe felt the most fun to control. It is always satisfying to let loose the true God of War.

 

 

Dragon Quest XI - Echoes of an Elusive Age

Started this game in 2018 and had to put it down after a pretty bad shoulder injury. Finally came back and finished it this year and i'm so glad I did.

 

 

Gotham Knights

Fuck this list. SO much useless collecting and grinding in a bad game. It was never any fun.

 

Hogwarts Legacy

All this game needs to be to get me is Harry Potter Bully.

Bad Ass Award: When I conquered Little Nightmares' speedrun. It was a tense but fun experience. I had to spend around eight hours to nab the speedrun trophy as certain sections in game kept screwing me over and over again.

 

Grind of the Year: Rise of the Tomb Raider's DLC trophies AKA the most boring DLCs ever.

 

Finally Done Award: Also Rise of the Tomb Raider. It took me six years to grab a bunch of those pesky DLC trophies. I forgot that I could use in-game cards to enhance the playable character Laura Croft.

 

King of the Internet, Worst Online Experience: None. I didn't play any multiplayer games in 2022.

Sleeper Hit of the Year: The Artful Escape. Thanks to PlayStation Plus Extra, I got to experience this feel-good game.

 

Biggest Bomb of the Year: Last Stop. Despite being made by the same studio who crafted the mind-blowing walking sim Virginia, to me, Last Stop is a disappointment. It started real good with its mysteries, but ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

 

Best Trophy Image: Bayonetta's Angel May Cry . It reminds players of Devil May Cry, does it not?

 

Worst Trophy Image: Lost Words: Beyond the Page's No Remorse . Can somebody enlighten me, what animal is it?

 

Best Female Character: The one and only witch mum in the whole universe, Bayonetta! She's sassy and fearless. What's not to like?

 

Best Male Character: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's Cal Kestis. I mean, the whole galaxy depends on him to restore the balance of the Force. He's got a cool-looking lightaber. I also enjoyed the interactions between him and his companion robot BD-1.

 

Best Plat of the Year: Witch mum the game AKA Bayonetta. A game so awesome I've decided to nab all the PS4 stacks... mayhaps the PS3 stack too if I can.

Most Anticipated Platinum of 2022: Devil May Cry 5. I anticipated this hack-and-slasher so much after it first debuted at E3 2018... until I witnessed its overly demanding trophy list, then I said nope! Now that it has been in wishlist, I still want to plat it, however.

Piece of Cake:

Mystery VN that plays more like a Kinetic Novel than a traditionel VN. Good story and twists but some of the solutions to the cases are more on the unbelievable side.

 

It`s like Dark Souls:

Not the complete game, but some of the Jump `n Run sequences in the extra rooms (especially in the DLC) made my hands and wrist hurts and gave me a blister on my thumb.

 

Bad Ass Award:

Got my first (2D) Soulslike platinum. The game was good, but I doesn`t find it as hard as some reviewers said it would be.

 

Grind of the Year:

500 fights on a timer, because your progress resets after 7 days on top of the grind to get Legendary Pilot reputation.

 

Finally Done Award:

7 Years and 3 months. Started it on the Vita and finished it with the PS4 Version.

Best Music:

Electro soundtrack that reminded me a bit of Daft Punk.

Beautiful action rpg with an interesting chinese fantasy setting and great story and characters.

Blair Witch

I like the first movie and the lore that was made for it (I even enjoyed Book of Shadows), so I played this one for october this year and got spooked, but not in a good way. The game (and more so the platinum) is to find collectibles in a dark wood with only your flashlight and your dog (best part of the game) by your side. The story was dumb and confusing at the same time and the horror wasn`t there, except for a few jump scares.

 

Best Trophy Image:

Who doesn`t like a cute zombie girl in an outfit that reminds one of the slave Leia costume, drawn in an anime art style?

The person, who made the trophy names for Shantae and the Pirate`s Curse, who named the trophy "What an eyesore...".

 

 

Worst Trophy Image:

Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul - Hell Yeah (You finished the game in hardcore mode). Just a distorted screaming mouth. I had two other contenders from the same game but I got them in 2019.

 

Best Female Character:

Dana Iclucia - Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. All I can write about her could be a potential spoiler. The only thing I could say is, that Nihon Falcom picked an aptly subtitle for Ys VIII..

 

Best Male Character:

The guy with the eyepatch in the foreground (I couldn`t find an Image of him alone)

Yue Jinzhao - Sword and Fairy 6. The same as for for Dana - most of the things that makes him my best male character would be a potential spoiler. He first comes out as your typical happy go lucky protagonist who cares for his "sister" but he has an serious and melancholic side to him.

 

Best Plat of the Year:

As a fan of the first Record of Lodoss War anime OVA and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, this game was something of a dream comes true.It is a bit short but the gameplay (almost one to one Symphony of the Night) and the throwbacks to Lodoss made it fun from beginning to end. I addition to that, the platinum doesn`t overstay it`s welcome (except the bow training trophy) and doesn`t demand outrageous grinds or tasks from you.

 

Worst Plat of the Year:

Broken mess of a game that has as much to do with Handball as Nacon/Bigben has with releasing good games. The only way to get two of the trophies is to play the career in a very specific way, because otherwise the game crashes and you can start the career mode all over again.

 

Most Anticipated Platinum of 2023:

Loved the PS2 games and played a bit of this one and liked it, only to put it on halt because I needed the harddrive space. Which was, in retrospect, a good thing, because now they made a patch, that gives the game an cel shading look, so it feels even more like the PS2 games.

Thanks to the new rewind system finally I was able to fulfill my childhood dream of being able to turn back time and prevent the ball from falling into the hole.

 

IT'S LIKE DARK SOULS: ELDEN RING

 

 

Literally. To be fair, most of the time the difficulty was quite tolerable, but Malenia and especially Elden Beast broke me.

 

BAD ASS AWARD: DEFEAT DRAGONLORD PLACIDUSAX WITH A COMET AZUR

 

 

I had already used up all the flasks, almost no health left. I managed to perfectly dodge one of his fatal swoops and decided to go all or nothing with Comet Azur. The amount of mana was exactly what was needed to wipe out the rest of his health. In the same second that Comet Azur ended, Placidusax dropped dead. I almost didn't believe it.

GRIND OF THE YEAR: JUST CAUSE 4

 

 

This is a 3/10 plat with a rarity of 6.38% for a good reason. 124 wingsuit stunts, 127 vehicle stunts, 185 speed stunts, over 150 locations to discover and 31 regions to secure besides collectables, side missions and another grind to reach army of chaos level 14. 

 

FINALLY DONE AWARD: CONAN EXILES

 

 

After 3 years and 3 weeks, I finally found someone to help me with The Tower of the Elephant.

 

KING OF THE INTERNET: MORTAL KOMBAT 11

 

 

I barely play online games, but I had a good time kompleting 50 Kasual Versus matches for this plat.

 

WORST ONLINE EXPERIENCE: TOMB RAIDER DEFINITIVE EDITION

 

 

The servers are completely abandoned. Thanks to PSNP I found a group of players to help me. Even so, the online grind to reach level 60 is almost unbearable.

"The Make Believes" is a fictional band created to produce the game's music. Their songs could easily be mistaken for some of greatest rock hits of the 60's. My personal favorite is "I Have Seen Everything" from the Lightbearer DLC.

 

SLEEPER HIT OF THE YEAR: SHADOW WARRIOR 3

 

 

I still think "Shadow Warrior 3" doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The gameplay is addictive and everything works just fine. I played it briefly before it came out of PS Plus Extra and was quite surprised by its high quality.

 

BIGGEST BOMB OF THE YEAR: REMOTHERED: BROKEN PORCELAIN

 

 

It's a shame. I was rooting for this franchise, but Broken Porcelain is a hopeless mess. The plot is pathetically confusing, the stealth mechanics barely work and several moments are destroyed by bad AI. I'm glad I've only played this now that most of the bugs have been fixed, and even then, it's a massive disappointment.

 

BEST TROPHY IMAGE: THE TOWN OF LIGHT (BEST TROPHY IMAGE) / MARTHA IS DEAD (BEST SET)

 

 

LKA really cares about their trophies' artwork. The plat tile of "The Town of Light" is simple but encapsulates the whole feeling of the game. A mixture of history and abandonment. And their new game, "Martha is Dead" has a beautiful set stylized as tarot cards.

 

WORST TROPHY IMAGE: TORMENTED SOULS (WORST IMAGE) / NEED FOR SPEED HEAT (WORST SET)

 

 

I loved "Tormented Souls", but the trophies are really ugly. The gameplay does a good job hiding the under-detailed models so it's a surprise that the trophies decide to focus on that. This one for the "Remorse" ending is the worst.  And "Need for Speed: Heat" could at least change colors depending on the type of trophies like "Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water" for example. But no, it's the same cheap image everytime. So lazy!

 

BEST FEMALE CHARACTER: MALENIA, BLADE OF MIQUELLA (ELDEN RING)

 

 

Not only for her epic storyline within the game, but mainly for her cultural impact outside of it. Malenia became synonymous with "extremely difficult boss" at the same time as she became a meme. She will never be forgotten.

 

BEST MALE CHARACTER: ETHAN WINTERS (RESIDENT EVIL: VILLAGE - SHADOWS OF ROSE)

 

 

The best dad in the universe indeed! Even after death, Ethan remains focused on protecting his family. The long-awaited reunion between him and his daughter Rose is heartbreaking even if it's surrounded by all the typical Resident Evil cliché spectacle. Also, being able to play the main game in third person increased my attachment to the character, even without being able to see his face fully.

 

BEST PLAT OF THE YEAR: FATAL FRAME: MAIDEN OF BLACK WATER

 

 

The first plat from one of my favorite franchises, rising from the ashes after years of being relegated to Nintendo consoles. I never thought I'd play a Fatal Frame again on PS, let alone get a platinum trophy from one.

 

WORST PLAT OF THE YEAR: CONAN EXILES

 

 

I conquered several easy 2/10 plats this year but none that feels cheaper than this one. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have started "playing" this crap years ago. But since there was only one trophy left for platinum...

 

MOST ANTICIPATED PLATINUM OF 2023: RESIDENT EVIL 4 REMAKE

 

 

Resident Evil is my favorite franchise. I have 12 plats from the main series games and the RE4 Remake plat will be one of my milestones. Probably the 9,000th trophy just like the only gold trophy in the original Resident Evil 4 (ps4 version) was my 8,000th trophy.

I actually platinumed this game back in 2018 but finally came back to finish the DLC this year and OMG, I've never gotten so mad at a game in a LONG time. The Solosseum was by far one of the hardest challenges I've done in a game. I highly recommend to not do the DLC. Not worth it.

 

Bad Ass Award: Thymesia

 

I had always been carried through Souls games so it was an interesting experience to try a Souls-like by myself. I'm so proud of myself for powering through this game and achieving the platinum! ?

 

Grind of the Year: Monster Hunter World

 

I still honestly can't believe I earned the platinum, it only took me 4 years! Crown hunting is absolutely brutal but I somehow managed to get lucky with some Elder Dragons.

I had to pick Yuito cause one, he's quite attractive, and two, had a great role to play in the story. I was immensely surprised by Scarlet Nexus and was definitely one of my favorite games this year.

That's Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth with a time of 4 years and 6 months. The game isn't that long, nor is it particularly hard. I just put it on hold and only returned to it last year.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I remember enjoying these games when I was younger but the PS4 trilogy annoyed me so much. I don't remember the controls being that clunky. I got some of the easier trophies and called it quits.

This one was so short it was really disappointing. The game itself is actually pretty fun, but it's one of those games that just hands you the plat.

I didn't really play anything that was difficult this year. Not sure if I've just gotten so old that games aren't as challenging as they used to be, or if games are just easier now, but either way I don't have anything for this.

 

Badass

I wasn't the biggest fan of this game, but I have to admit, it was so cool being able to just walk up to a group of enemies and OHKO all of them with the quick draw.

I had to play through this game 4 times. By the end of it I was so tired of it.

There was a lot of competition for this one this year. I went back and finished up a lot of games that had been left unfinished. But clocking in at 3 years 1 month for the plat, I have Musynx.

I hate playing online, so I'm giving the award to BBCTB, because I just had to win a single match. Not even in ranked, just in a player lobby. Making it painfully easy to get.

Boosting this was a nightmare, even though I was self-boosting with my PS4 and PS5. First off, you have to do 100 matches, which is already kind of a nightmare. But to make it worse you HAVE to do ranked, and you have to win 50 of them. To make matters worse, you can't tell who your matching with, so you just have to kind of hope it's your boosting partner. Many times I would get matched at the same time on both consoles, and end up with different people. Then the matchmaking itself is absolute garbage. It only matches you if you're within a very specific range of someone. I had to make a 3rd account to boost my 2nd account to get caught up to my actual account, because I had done about 5 matches before trying to self boost. That alone was enough of a gap to keep the accounts from matching. So whenever I ran into randos, it was nerve wracking. Since it could screw up the ranks and prevent me from matching with myself. Then to make matters even worse than they already are, it had a lot of difficulty matching me with myself. Sometimes it would take up to 30 minutes to match. It was just a nightmare. If I wasn't such a big DOA fan, I never would have made it through.

This game is so good. It's unfortunate that basically no one has played it thanks to the controversy surrounding the developer and the developer getting shut down as a result. All around the time this was released.

 

Biggest Bomb of the Year

I had high hopes for this game. An ArcSys fighter is almost always good, and this was recommended to me by someone who I used to play fighting games with a lot, but this game is a broken nightmare. It's VERY clear who the best characters are in this game. Plus, I just didn't like how limiting it felt. Most anime fighters let you chain most normals into each other, but not here. You can only chain very specific moves, unless you're Striker. But she's absolute garbage. A full combo using an entire meter does the same as a single special from Crusader. It's so dumb.

This is the worst game I have ever played. I thought it was a joke game and would be funny based on the images, but no. It's just an awful game with awful and overly basic trophy images. It was clearly thrown together in an afternoon as a cheap cash grab.

I wanted to give this to Aloy, but she was just kind of a self righteous dick in Forbidden West. So instead it goes to Jesse. I'm pretty excited for Control 2.

Zack Fair - Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion

I try not to include remasters/ports on lists like this, but Zack is one of my favorite characters of all time. He was the only one deserving of this spot.

 

Best Plat of the Year

This game was so much fun. I could not stop playing it. I did the whole thing in a single sitting without even stopping to eat. I haven't enjoyed a game like this in so long.

 

Wurst Plat ov teh Yeer

This was actually a pretty fun game, but it's a demo. A demo you have to pay for. It's an unfinished game and it never tells you that until after you've beaten it. I was so mad that I got tricked into buying something both unfinished, but also apparently had no intention of getting patched or finished. I played the Vita version and they recently released this on PS5, but there's no way of knowing if it's just this unfinished version, or if it did get finished and that's an actual release. So if you see this game, I wouldn't recommend buying it.

I earned the Platinum for the PS4 version in 2019, and it turns out that the PS5 version autopops - I guess it was just Destiny... 2.

 

It’s Like Dark Souls - Vampyr

 

Some of the enemies can be tough, but the true boss of this game is its poor performance; a lot of stuttering, frame drops, and crashes. The crashes in particular were almost hourly, and a preventative measure cited online is to turn off/on your console periodically.

 

Badass Award - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

  

2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare takes me back to the original MW trilogy, and how much fun I had playing them back in the day. Seeing the return of Captain Price and Task Force 141 alone cinches it this award for me.

 

Grind of the Year - Lost Judgment

 

Heeeeeeere's Johnny- er, Lost Judgment! Overall, Lost Judgment is less difficult than the first game, but it's grindier, too. In addition to the regular Yakuza-standard Completion List, substories, minigames, etc., there is also a whole new string of quests called School Stories. In these, Yagami has to deal with angsty teenagers and their shenanigans.

 

Finally Done - Far Cry 6

 

Far Cry 6 wasn't actually the longest completion on my list, but it felt like it since you have to wait three real-life weeks (at a minimum) to defeat 3 Insurgent leaders since only one spawns per week. Also, these events actually include the enemies retaking your hard-earned liberated camps to artificially lengthen the game - annoying, to say the least.

 

King of the Internet - Destiny 2

 

Destiny 2 takes this by default since this and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl are the only two games in which I played online multiplayer.

 

Worst Online Experience - Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

 

I played the PS4 version, and the performance even in single-player campaign was pretty bad. The issues only worsened in online modes. I love the premise of the idea, but not its execution.

 

Best Music - The Artful Escape

 

The Artful Escape not only had good music, but also featured it as a thematic concept, using it to touch on authenticity and identity.

 

Sleeper Hit - Chicken Police

 

At first glance, you have a noir-themed game featuring anthromorphic animals (and well, it's true), but you also have an engaging detective narrative that takes unexpected twists and turns.

 

Biggest Bomb of the Year - Vampyr

 

Luckily, I didn't play any games this year that were irredeemably bad; however, if I really had to pick one, it'd be Vampyr (for the previously mentioned performance issues).

 

Best Trophy Image - "The Whole Picture" from Chicory: A Colorful Tale

 

Seeing this image before playing the game I would have said, "I can definitely draw better than that." After playing through Chicory: A Colorful Tale, I can confidently say this trophy artwork is infinitely better than anything I can produce.

Best Female Character - Kena from Kena: Bridge of Spirits & Stella from Spiritfarer

  

 

Throughout the game, Kena demonstrates her compassion, fear, doubt, and courage. Her interactions with others she meets on her journey, and as well as confronting and overcoming her obstacles makes her worthy of this category.

 

 

 

Stella's character development and backstory reveal is quite a slow burn. Little by little, Stella (via her duties as a Spiritfarer) helps and comforts herself by helping and comforting others in their time of need.

 

Best Male Character - Kratos from God of War: Ragnarok

 

 

2018's God of War already showed Kratos' growth as a person, but God of War: Ragnarok takes Kratos' character to heights I could never have imagined during his Angry Loincloth days. His growth as a father, friend, and as a god was incredibly engaging - I look forward to Kratos' future adventures. Also, Christopher Judge gave a phenomenal performance.

 

Best Platinum of the Year - God of War: Ragnarok

 

Minus the collectibles and some story beats, I loved everything about God of War: Ragnarok. The customization, armours, characters, environments, themes, etc. I especially loved Vanaheim and its diverse terrains.

 

Wurst Platinum ov the Yeer - Horizon Forbidden West

 

I was a bit lenient on Horizon Zero Dawn's lackluster main narrative since it was the first of the franchise, but I expected Aloy's character and Forbidden West's story to better than it was (especially since now Guerilla had the first game to build upon). I thought the main antagonists of the game were laughably bad, and Aloy was just kind of a jerk in some situations. Also, I experienced quite a few bugs as a day one player, such as falling through drawbridges after lowering them, getting stuck in obstacles, etc.

 

Most Anticipated Platinum of 2023 Award - Marvel's Spider-Man 2

 

While I'm a little disappointed they missed the opportunity to call it Marvel's Spider-Men, I'm looking forward to this game after playing both the original 2018 PS4 game and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. I just hope they don't bring back crimes (or at the very least as trophy requirements) and MJ-like sections.

Art of Fighting Anthology

 

While this was not the hardest plat that I achieved in 2022 (pretty damn close though), it was easily the most frustrating. The AI reads your inputs and the balancing is ridiculous. Your opponent does so much more damage than you do even if you're using the same character. This game had me raging 80% of the way through it and I can honestly say that I had zero fun.

Clearing 100% of the base game combo challenges in the game

 

I had considered myself to be a very mid-level fighting game player. I'm nowhere near noob level, yet I'm not one of these guys that gives a 3/10 difficulty score to every fighting game that isn't P4A or Koihime. That being said, these combo challenges were a major step up in difficulty for me - mainly because pause cheese does not work in 90+% of the trials, and that was something I always abused in the fighters I played before this (and I still abuse it when given the option). I sank several hours into this one trophy and I had to take two breaks from the game where I started and finished an entirely different game each time. I'm still not at the "it's a 3/10 lul git gud" level, but now I feel like I can say that I'm good at the genre.

 

GRIND OF THE YEAR

 

 

Injustice 2

 

Outside of a story mode that wasn't very time consuming, the entire game was a grind, and it was one that took over 100 hours. Granted, a lot of that was AFK time, but this game still comes to my mind when people talk about excessively grindy platinums. Hated this game.

 

I would have given this award to Digimon All-Star Rumble, but I had completed at least half of that grind in 2021.

Luckily, Majima is both for me. Holy shit, what a well-written character. His slow descent into madness was portrayed very well and he was fun to play as. He provides so much comic relief while still being a respectable and sad character that you want the best for.

Digimon Survive

 

In my opinion, this is how a JRPG platinum should be designed. The plat makes you get everything that the game has to offer without making you do stupid, meaningless tasks like "obtain all weapons" or "kill 10,000 enemies." I enjoyed this one the whole way through, although the first couple of chapters were a bit slow. It was worth it though, because the story was really good. The plat requires 3 full playthroughs and a partial one, and it did not feel like a drag at all.

Digimon All-Star Rumble

 

Funny how both my Best Plat and Worst Plat awards are from Digimon games. This game was shit even from a non-trophy perspective, but the journey to the platinum literally made me question this hobby. 90+% of the game is an RNG-filled grind. I would not recommend this to even the most hardcore Digimon fan.

I mean, it's literally like Dark Souls, it's a soulslike through and through. This game is super punishing, especially on the hardest difficulty 'Children of Sissna' which doesn't really increase the difficulty but instead cuts your health and stamina by two thirds. Doesn't sound like much but trust me it turns every encounter into a dance with death. I really enjoyed this though and it felt super satisfying getting the platinum and 100%, even if I did cheese the last two bosses and the DLC boss ?.

Finishing the golden path in this game was so fucking cool and my wife and I felt so clever figuring it out. Getting a notepad and pen out to solve this thing gave us this amazing feeling that we hadn't felt for years. Truly a wonderful game. If you haven't yet, check it out!

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number - TROPHY ADDICT

Getting A+ on all levels and beating all levels on hard mode was a massive grind and when compared to the first game, ball crushingly difficult. I love this game overall but there were definitely times where I wanted to stomp on my Vita.

Dishonored - 10 years, 1 week

This year marked the monumental occasion of finally getting 100% on one of my favourite games. The DLC has a infamous reputation for being very difficult and RNG based, which turned me off doing it for years. Went back to it on a whim as I was replaying the main game anyway and got it done with relative ease. And had a lot of fun doing so! If you want some more of my thoughts on this I did a long ass post on it in my trophy checklist.

Second year running giving this award to Fallout 76. It has genuinely become my favourite Fallout game. I was anticipating The Pitt expansion all year and when it dropped it was a little underwhelming to be honest but I still had a blast jumping back into this world and exploring an old location from Fallout 3.

Got the platinum for this in 2022 and then attempted to tackle the online DLC stuff. Big mistake. It's soooooooooooo boring. Me and my boosting partner fell off with it and then I never got back to it as my son was born. Maybe one day?

Everyone loved this and I honestly have never been more bored in my life playing a video game. I mean, it's fine, it plays well, it's utterly gorgeous and the story actually starts out really strong. But yet again we have a bloated Ubisoft open world with icons everywhere, a story that goes nowhere which ends on an unearned cliffhanger, has the worst use of Hollywood actors and the protagonist is about as interesting as toenail clippings. I really liked Zero Dawn and have fond memories of it, and I really wanted to like this but I just couldn't. I'm willing to admit that it's probably not the games fault and it's probably my tastes that have changed. Maybe.

Lastly there's the endings in New Tales from the Borderlands that I was unable to get any of other than the perfect ending no matter how many times I tried.

Had a good time with it. It's sort of a detective thriller in which you go through cases connecting the "dots" on who was murdered how. A bit overpriced though.

 

 

Biggest Bomb

This series was so hyped up and praised by so many and was a major letdown. Granted visual novels are not my favourite genre, but I've played a fair amount of them and this one is far down at the bottom.
